"Art is the only "thing" capable of expressing the vast diversity of human experience and
the full range of feeling. It is most free when it is purposeless, which is not to say useless.
It only serves to manifest the artist's inner most feelings. Through an extraordinarily
sensitive relationship with my medium, I take flight because it's my heart's desire, not because
it's my limited assignment. A sense of play is preserved.
The game's challenge is to create a unique sign, expressing something universal, meaningful
and relevant within the physical boundaries of my art. To practice my art, my expression,
with discipline of the self.
Some of the most daunting challenges an artist faces are reconciling a playful artistic spirit
with practical realities of existence. I do agree though, criteria that defines what is good
in art must be ethical before aesthetic. An artist's talents dealing with composition, color, line,
weight, even light, to create a sensuous surface and a dynamic retinal experience are gifts
that only enhance the value of art. The true value is something intangible.
Working without an a priori idea, rather than painting a symbol of a symbol already in mind,
the painting is a direct symbol. With the aim to tap the deepest well of thought, an artist's
more completely abstract symbols are most universal. A work of the mind yet sensual.
Absolutely every work of art is, on some level, the artist's self portrait. Having conceded
this, the essence and aspiration of my artworks are to offer sanctuary for the mental worker.
Transcendent, even spiritual. Creating and giving peace. Perhaps this is because peace
is what I need."
Thank you! so much for looking at my site and taking the time to discover my work.
If my work shares with you, my dear and beloved friend, five minutes of pleasure or peace
then I've already succeeded.
Sincerely, Scott Jeffrey Cousins
